Our Mission

The mission of the Scobee Education Center is to serve as a catalyst for educational and community resources, accessible to all, through a focus on scientific literacy and life-changing learning, thereby fostering family well-being and regional economic development.

Welcome

The Scobee Education Center at San Antonio College is dedicated to enriching the lives of children and adults alike by fostering a love for science, technology, and astronomy through hands on experiences and programs at the Challenger Learning Center and Scobee Planetarium.  The Center was established on the campus of San Antonio College in memory of the lives given by the seven crew members of the Space Shuttle Challenger/STS-51L "Teacher in Space" mission.  Our goal is to carry on the crew's educational mission, to spark youth interest and joy in science and engineering.  The center is named after the Francis R. (Dick) Scobee family - Commander Scobee, his widow Dr. June Scobee Rodgers, and their children Kathie Scobee Fulgham and Maj. Gen. Richard W. Scobee.

About The Center

All the stars aligned in 2012 when ground was broken to bring the Challenger Learning Center from its former home at Brooks City Base to join celestial forces with the Scobee Planetarium at San Antonio College, which has brought accessible astronomy to San Antonio since 1961.

The two space science venues were made for each other.  Dick Scobee was a San Antonio College student long before he became commander of the ill-fated Challenger space shuttle mission.  The families of Challenger's crew, led by Scobee's widow, June, who also attended San Antonio College, formed the Challenger Center for Space Science Education to promote scientific literacy and prepare students for success in the technology age.

As a hub for science, technology, engineering, and math education in San Antonio, the Scobee Education Center inspires students of all ages to learn and use space science knowledge, problem-solving skills, teamwork, communication, and applied math in hands-on and minds-on experiential education.

Challenger Center

The Scobee Education Challenger Learning Center offers dynamic, hands-on exploration and discovery opportunities to students in communities in San Antonio and surrounding areas. These programs equip students with the knowledge, confidence, and skills that will help better our collective social and economic well-being.  Our unique and proven teaching model gives students the chance to become astronauts and engineers, solving real-world problems as they share the thrill of discovery on missions through the Solar System. Using space simulation and role-playing strategies, students bring their classroom studies to life and cultivate the skills needed for future success in STEM related career fields. Planetarium & Observatory

Since 1961, nearly 1.75 million visitors and three generations of families have attended over 18,000 educational and entertaining programs at the Planetarium.  We will continue the tradition for generations to come as thousands of San Antonio residents and visitors continue to discover our facility.  Through our state-of-the-art Digistar 5 System, full dome Planetarium shows immerse audiences and takes them on adventures through time and space with vivid images and sounds of stars, planets, the dark depths of the universe, and more. The Scanlan Observatory, located atop the iconic blue Charles E. Cheever Jr. Star Tower, houses a 10-in refractor telescope and features a 360-degree rotating dome and panel that opens 90-degrees, enabling star gazing in any direction.  The new Scobee Education Center Planetarium & Scanlan Observatory have ushered in the dawn of an exciting chapter in our commitment to San Antonio College and our community, providing entertainment and learning for students of all ages.
